According to the American Anthropological Association, more than 200 women kill their children in the United States each year. Homicide is one of the leading causes of death of children under age four, yet we continue to "persist with the unrealistic view that this is rare behavior," says Jill Korbin, expert on child abuse, who has studied mothers who killed their children.

80% of women who kill their children suffer from mental illness

A University of South Carolina School of Medicine study of women who murdered their offspring showed that 80% were suffering from a serious, diagnosable mental illness, such as depression, schizophrenia, or mental retardation, when they committed the crimes. Yet, only about 20% were receiving any type of counseling, medication, or other treatment for their mental illness at the time of the murders.

Most of the Women also had extreme personal problems or stress at their lives and were emotionally overwhelmed at the time of the crimes, points out forensic psychologist Steven J. Shea, an assistant professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine's William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute. "Long before the Susan Smith case in Union, S.C., received national attention, mothers have killed their children. Maternal filicide is horrific. It's emotionally riveting, and people don't understand why."
