Eastern Promises (2007) was written by British Steve Knight, who previously wrote the script for Stephen Frears’ Dirty Pretty Things (2002), another film which delves deep into the underbelly of modern multicultural London. The David Cronenberg directed film Eastern Promise is a British/Canadian/American production, which delves relentlessly into a Russian organized crime family in London.
The audience experience this hidden world of hardened masculinity through the eyes of a naïve and moralistic young woman who is trying to find the family of an orphaned newborn. Eastern Promises importantly depicts a number of social issues such as human trafficking and also the loss of cultural identity. Dirty Pretty Things explored a similar plight of moral obligation when an illegal immigrant found a human heart in a London hotel where prostitution and drug dealings are the norm.

Social Themes
The changing face of London is used for great dramatic effect in Eastern Promises. The opening scenes of the restaurant in Eastern Promises create a wonderful sense of culture and gathering but the patriarchal figure of this establishment Semyon, is treated immediately as a suspicious character by Cronenberg and his audience. Semyon is revealed through the course of the film to be the true antagonist of the narrative; we learn he is involved in the trafficking of young pubescent Russian girls for sexual exploitation.
