The Yellowstone Trail was the first transcontinental highway, and it was used to promote tourism across the United States from Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound. Today, history buffs hope to revive interest in the Trail, once again bringing visitors to this region of the country.

Trail was begun as a grassroots effort by Joseph Parmley of Ipswich, South Dakota, in 1912. He believed strongly in the need for good roads across the country, and began a campaign to have one built. After the initial stretch of the Trail was completed in 1914, the West Coast extension pushed the road to the Pacific Ocean in Washington. In 1915, the East Coast extension was begun, offering good travel from Chicago to Minneapolis. While the Trail was often simply a dirt path, it was better than many roads of the day. In later years, many areas of the Trail were paved with concrete to keep them from becoming muddy and rutted.
